View towards Moel Siabod on the left, the Ogwen valley running off to the right with Tryfan as the rocky armadillo on the skyline. Snowdon is at the back in the centre.

Taken from the footpath between Crafnant and the Moel Siabod cafe, near Crimpiau. This is a lovely walk from Trefriw with a lunch stop.

Food shopping and eating in

The area is well supplied by shops selling local produce.

Trefriw

There is an excellent butchers and grocers T J Parry Jones and Daughters on the road below No 4. so don't worry if you turn up with nothing. Maralyn's densely filled pies are well renowned and throughout each morning warm sausage rolls and pasties will be coming out of the rear kitchen. You'll also find a wide selection of meat cuts which will be as locally sourced as possible along with the vegetables and grocery supplies needed to complete each meal, good diary products, local cakes, eggs and bread.

Llanrwst

There are also 2 traditional butchers in Llanrwst, an excellent health food shop (with organic fruit and vegetables delivered on Wednesdays, a good bakery (Scilicorns, go early and try the spelt or corn bread), and a delicatessen, Blas a Fwyd, which is also a wine merchant with a large wine shop. The Spar shop owners live just down the road and stock locally made bread, cakes and cheeses. There is a good Co-Op store which can provide the rest - its tucked around the back of the street and is possibly the most central and easy place to park: https://maps.app.goo.gl/xrSsMa2jhzspbLSg7

Betws y Coed

Has a very tempting delicatessen in the parade of shops near the station with a good cheese and olive counter. The Spar shop includes a bakery which is a good pit stop for packed lunches if you're heading out for a walk. Try the spicy curried filo parcels.

Conwy

Is blessed with independents including a dedicated cheese shop near the castle, a wine shop on the high street and a French boulangerie and patisserie also on the high street which is also a small cafe. The White Bakery https://maps.app.goo.gl/GCTUuahpAvDmg4kc7 sells Turkish pastries and cakes to take out.

We always appreciate visitors shopping as locally as possible but if you're staying for a week and would like to make provisioning easy you could consider pre-ordering your basic supplies and having them delivered. Most of the major supermarkets deliver, the Asda drivers seem the most accustomed to the hill up to Victoria Terrace.

The honesty egg float just outside of Llanrwst on the A470 to Betws y Coed. Not sign posted - gate opening in the fence on the left not long after you leave the 20mph and go into the 40mph zone and before the petrol station. The chickens live next door, these are the freshest eggs locally. Take £1.60 per half dozen in cash. Typically opens 09:30 every day, go early. Fresh seasonal vegetables are also sold here and in the trailer over the road on Saturdays.

Try the following depending on where you've spent the day and what you fancy -

Tir a Mor for fish and chips https://tiramor.touchtakeaway.net/menu

Betws y Coed

Hangin Pizza near the railway station. Nice vibe and interesting toppings, a favourite. Sit outside on the benches with a beer or take a picnic blanket for another spot. https://www.hanginpizzeria.co.uk/

The fish and chip shop near the Pont y Pair bridge is also good.

Llandudno Junction

Enochs Fish and Chips. Best around. You can pre-order and collect. https://www.enochs.co.uk/

The falls above Pont y Pair, Betws y Coed, in flood. The footpath upriver towards Miners Bridge and Capel Curig is lovely.

There is a good fish and chip takeaway next to the bridge and the Pont y Pair pub opposite that.

Eating out

The following are worth considering -

Breakfasts and brunch

The Alpine Coffee Shop, Betws y Coed. Cafe with a conscience and great menu. Equally fun to sister business Hangin Pizza. https://www.alpinecoffeeshop.co.uk/.Dog friendly.

Moel Siabod Cafe, Caffi Siabod, Capel Curig. Not to be confused with the previous business which has moved to near Criccieth. Fill up with carbs before you head off into the hills. Dog friendly. https://www.caffisiabod.co.uk/

Seagrass Beach Cafe, Llanfairfechan. Great breakfast and brunch dishes, coffee and home made cake. Combine with a walk to Aber Falls or walk along the seafront path towards the bird reserve and Penrhyn Castle. Dog friendly. Book ahead if you can, they get really busy. Call 01248 680900. They stop serving at 3pm and then move to a pre-order takeout menu from 5pm.

Dinners

The Fairy Falls, Trefriw. The pub just below No 4. You don't usually have to book. Very much the local pub. Dog friendly.

The Old Ship, Trefriw. Again within sight of No 4. Book ahead as its not open every night 01492 640013. A traditional CAMRA pub with a solid menu.

Princes Arms Hotel, Trefriw. Still within easy walking distance, a reassuringly traditional small hotel with a loyal customer base. https://www.princes-arms.co.uk/dining

Slightly further away

The Groes Inn, Tyn y Groes Lovely building and setting, usually reliable. https://www.groesinn.com/

The Castle Hotel, Conwy. Comfortable with a kitchen that is turning out some good dishes. https://castlewales.co.uk/

Dylans, Conwy. Quite fun, can have larger family tables in so. There is also a good Dylans in Menai Bridge in a great setting on the quayside. Serves through the day at weekends. https://dylansrestaurant.co.uk/restaurant/locations/conwy

Bryn Williams at Porth Eirias, on the promenade at Colwyn Bay. Good brunch and lunch spot combined with a promenade and beach walk. Not perhaps the loveliest of buildings but very understandable why this has a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Book ahead. Sandy dog beach but check which sections of beach are open to dogs - they are signed - there is a dog warden patrol. Porth Eirias itself only accepts dogs at their outside tables. https://portheirias.com/

Olif, Betws y Coed Tapas and sharing platters, informal. https://www.olifbetws.wales/page/eat

Special treat, book ahead

The Jackdaw, Conwy. Small and special. https://www.thejackdawconwy.co.uk/

Signatures, Conwy Morfa. This might be in a members club amongst park homes but its been a local favourite for a long time with good reason. https://darwinescapes.co.uk/aberconwy-resort-spa/facilities/signatures-restaurant/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gmb+signatures

Nikki Ip, Deganwy. If you like Chinese this is the one to head for. https://www.nikkiips.com/

Track through the woods above the village. You can just see Millie the Collie in the centre.

Take Crafnant Road uphill out of the village and when you reach Gymannog Farm follow the track over the bridge in front of you rather than the road. You can reach both Crafnant and Geirionnydd Lakes from here.
